The changing Republican Party: changes for the better?

. . . is discussed here at Crooked Timber.

If you read this in light of the Medvetz article from 2006 on the conservative 'Wednesday Club' led by Grover Norquist (linked somewhere in that discussion on the Crooked Timber blog) it seems as though what is happening is that the conservative movement in the US is finally falling prey to "maximalism" in a big way: an increasingly uncontrollable Tea Party fringe which will push the Republican Party to the extreme away from winning positions. Either that or it is a winning strategy, suggesting that indeed the place has gone mad.

For a conservative US view on all of this and the danger it poses to American conservatives, David Frum provides interesting insights.
