More managers or more academics?

The Times Higher Education recently ran a short piece here on the rise of managers in UK universities. An excerpt:

"[. . .] The inexorable rise of the manager was highlighted on 23 February, when it was revealed that the number working in universities had risen more than three times as rapidly as the number of academics in recent years. Although the number of scholars has risen by about 10 per cent since 2003-04, the number of managers has rocketed by 33 per cent. [. . .]."

I hardly find this surprising. However, as various proposals on cuts are produced, it will be interesting to see if university heads increasingly see if the problems in any "inefficiencies" is because there are too many academic staff or managers . . .
